The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing early showing last autumn.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed team members about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a clearer direction.
The president expressed that the developers is now overhauling the project with a renewed focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
This announcement mirrors a comparable move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the entire content from Ismailer's announcement:
Team—
I know you all just completed your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative developers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last fall’s the game demo was enlightening. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You took the feedback to consideration and revamped the title with a renewed vision - one that’s poised to fulfill its ambition to our audience.
The belief in this project grows every day. To advance the outstanding progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the latest Lead of the team. After some time of conversations, he starts with us on next week.
Ben’s management and background in the competitive gaming space is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most well-known titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in greeting him in the coming days. We are all eager to persist seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to ahead.
David
The appointee currently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in various production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.
The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a public demo. At the time, the developers presented the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Challenge the rivals with fresh skills, stakes, and obstacles that evolve every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively go big, put it on the line, and pray your group can secure victory? The decision is in your hands."
Project Ethos lacks an announced launch window or consoles, but enthusiasts can anticipate additional details as development advances.
