A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Users who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
